Ford Mustang Ratings, Reviews and Analysis

On April 17, 1964, New York World's Fair visitors were the first to glimpse a vehicle that would become a cultural icon. The first Ford Mustang would go on to reach its yearly sales target in just three months' time, reaching a production milestone of one million units less than two years later. In 50 full years of production, the Ford Mustang seemed to sync with the decades as they passed, ultimately growing into a globally sold flagship built to compete with the world's best.

Borrowed parts and fast development were the staples of the first Mustang program, which mandated a four-seat sports car weighing under 2500 pounds and retailing for less than $2500. Early examples of the car -- produced in 1964, formally sold as 1965 models, but referred to by enthusiasts as "1964 1/2" models -- were equipped with a 2.8-liter inline six-cylinder engine that did not hint at the tire-smoking V8 reputation that would come in time. Late 1965 models did not host the quirks of their predecessors: alternators rather than generators, no hidden "Ford Falcon" script underneath the steering wheel tirm ring, a new inline-six and a range of available V8 engines marked the Mustang's maturation. The Mustang GT debuted this year, formally pairing a V8 engine with additional comfort and convenience features. Texas-based racer Carroll Shelby turned his attention to the car, setting in motion a series of racecars and street-going sports cars that would become significant points in American automotive history.

It is a car that I plan on keeping forever!

It is just a blast to drive around town and still looks good even as the body style approaches 10 yrs old. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a fun run around car. The back seat does get small for anybody larger than a small child however for long trips.

I'll probably keep it until one of us expires.

Appreciated by most folks, lots of complements. Easy and comfortable to drive on short hops or long cruises. Fun on curvy roads. Beautiful V-8 sound, nearly addictive. Rear seat area sparse except for kids or small adult who doesn't mind sitting sideways, otherwise just a fancy luggage area. No major expenses in 44K except new tires and brake service. About the last of "old" design before Ford started messing it up again. Very good highway mileage with a little effort. I don't do a lot of travelling any more, primarily use it around town.

excellent car for the money and it made in the USA.

Great retro styling. Mostly mid 20's fuel mileage, high 20's when highway driving. Low 15 seconds quarter mile at mile high. My first new Mustang did about a the same performance (68 Cobra Jet) at 8 MPG. Have owned many cars over the years, foreign and domestic. This is my favorite.

Best value of smiles per mile ever.

Its appearance is striking, its performance is outstanding and it is an extremely comfortable car to drive. For a muscle car, it gets reasonable gas mileage (overall about 15 mpg). It is reliable enough to be used as a daily driver and forgiving enough to withstand some pretty severe traffic conditions during rush hour when I do take it to work. All in all, it has been a blast.

Recall Notices

2017 Ford Mustang (3/13/2017)

Campaign Number: 17V168000
Component Name: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH
Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
Description: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2017 Ford Mustang vehicles. The return spring for the driver side interior door handle may come loose, allowing the driver's door to unlatch in a side impact crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 206, "Door Locks and Door Retention Components."
Defect: If the door unlatches in a crash it can increase the risk of injury.
Corrective Action: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the driver-side interior door handle and repair the return spring, as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin April 24, 2017. Owners may contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for the recall is 17C04.

Additionally, unless included in "Zone A" or "Zone B" above, Ford is recalling certain 2007-2008 Ford Ranger, Edge and Lincoln MKX, 2006-2008 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Lincoln Zephyr and MKZ, 2005-2008 Ford Mustang and 2005-2006 Ford GT vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in the states of Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. Defect: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
Corrective Action: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. Interim letters informing owners of the recall and that parts are not yet available began mailing March 1, 2017. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 17S01.
